Just watched this video and bounced between chuckles, heavy sighs, and anger. Everyone has the right to change their mind, and when they are presented with new information I would actually hope that they would. This, however, is crazy.
President Obama has also had his share of broken promises and changed positions, but there’s a difference here; Obama’s broken promises have come – as far as I can tell – from being unable to keep them, not from never having had any intention to keep them. The promises were heartfelt even as they were perhaps naïve. The changed positions have ranged from complete flip-flops (Largely on issues related to national security, where I can only hope that the new information he got after becoming President was so overwhelming that he had but almost no choice.) to shifts in one direction along a continuing arc (His current support of gay rights.). But again, I sense constancy in the man’s moral convictions and consistency in his arguments.
Governor Romney has not shown this. What he has shown is that he wants to be President so much that he is willing to do and say anything to get there. That’s not who we need running this country.
When you promise something or make a stand for something, it makes a difference whether you actually believe it or not as you make that promise. If you promise and then don’t deliver, belief at least allows you the chance to try again. That’s what conviction is, and conviction is a prime source of character. Where is Governor Romney’s? I can’t get over how hollow he seems, and whether you agree with the ghost of Romney present or the ghost of Romney past, neither one shows much substance.
It doesn’t matter this cycle because the meat puppets( I love Driftglass) don’t care who is running or what he stands for just as long as that black guy gets run outta town on a rail (secretly, they wish it was at the end of a rope).
